The party try a variety of measures to track down either Harkon, the mysterious hooded figure or the dungeon:

  • Continue talking to Harkon. He thinks his imprisonment is more to do with Etella than himself. He doesn't have any memories before being where he is now. He senses magic: conjuration, divination and abjuration. Harkon says the figure resembles a sun elf.
  • Ask the towers and Trina about the scene Troll found himself in, including getting Saju to recreate the rock and draw the scene and the captor. The rock is not unique and its working suggests human or dwarven craftsmanship. Their best guess is that the captor is a tainted sun elf, not of the Roulae family or related to the sun elf in the Rue. The Roulae family experiments have occasionally had side effects that could be described as 'taintings'.
  • Go to Fort Rannick and ask the best undergroundy person there whether the caverns beneath the fort are made of the same stuff as the sample. Doesn't appear to be.
  • Go to Kharag Monastery and ask Sir Veketh about the rock. He used to work stone in a previous life. He doesn't think it is dwarven. Says it is definitely worked, maybe by humans or possibly elves. Not surface stone, found everywhere.
  • Go to Ashhope and ask the Stonemason's Guild for their advice. After some consultation the consensus is the style of stonecutting resembles the hand of a rather famous craftsman from this guild a couple of hundred years ago whose works include the dungeons beneath the King's castle in Ashhope, amongst others. The stone's composition is common in the caverns beneath Ashhope. Ask around about the figure in Troll's vision: no leads.
  • Troll reviews his family's memoirs. There are other sun elf families mentioned that have collaborated with the Roulae in their experiments, but no specifics were mentioned.
  • Go to the Mages' Guild in Avarriel. They suggest that black eyes may indicate infection, enchantment or possession; detecting what magic is present may help to determine the root cause. Probably not dark elf parentage: they tend to have red irises. Not vampirism or lycanthropy.
  • Rowaine suggests using a druid's Tree Stride or Master Earth spell to get to the dungeon. The former is too limited (range), the latter too dangerous (once per day, self only, possibly no way back).
  • Both Calico and Violet use Master Earth to travel to a spot on the surface close to the dungeon, with Aquilla Yoke, Ring Gate and Rary's Telepathic Bond. Try from Harkon: druids sink into the ground then immediately reappear in the same spot. Try the next day from Trina: same result. Calico says that it is almost like there is nowhere to go to - or that it failed in the same way as the Find the Path divination spell failed.

Back at Harkon, Ezalor indicates that Harkon wishes to talk to Troll again. Troll touches the root and returns to the dungeon. "Hello again," the man in black says. "Come find me. Not Harkon. You can't cheat, you can't get here by magic." Troll then fades back to reality. He keeps his hand on the root for a long time but nothing further happens.

  • The druids try Find the Path to the guy and to Harkon. Both fail.
