The party hire a local to take them north upriver in his rowboat. 3 gold pieces buys them an hour's worth of travel. Rowaine takes an oar and helps out. Going against the current, the pace is slower than walking. After the allotted time the party disembark on the east shore and make their way north on foot.

Marching orders and night watch schedules are established:

Before dark, Enok spreads dry twigs around the camp perimeter, hoping to provide warning should we be approached.

The first day and night pass uneventfully. In the morning Enok checks for any untoward signs and finds none.

The second day and night passes. Enok's morning sweep reveals that something has approached during the night, close enough to spot us, and then retreated without being detected.

The group abandon their original plan to enter Capiscia to the north, and backtrack down the river for some time, aiming to hinder any pursuit. They instead plan to take to the forest some distance to the south and head towards Korenheim to the northeast, roughly half way between Capiscia and the port city of Carthenage.

After a couple of hours of wading through the water, Enok spots a figure moving off to his left, from tree to tree. He quickly warns the rest. Rowaine carries Anassia out of the water and places her on the shore. She then loosens her axe and pulls out a dagger. Vor-Wrek moves in front of the pair while Enok and Krag cover the party's front and rear.

Krag spots a figure in the trees and immediately whacks it with Spiritual Hammer.

Another figure looses an arrow at Vor-Wrek, but misses. Enok returns fire, downing the new threat.

Rowaine throws a dagger at the nearest quarry, wounding it.

Vor-Wrek moves towards the figure that has Rowaine's dagger buried in its thigh, but stops short as yet another appears along his path. They exchange blows.

The figures are of human size and are wearing green and brown clothing that camouflages them well with the landscape.

Enok fires two more arrows at one of the brigands, both of which hit.

At each turn, more and more brigands pop out of the foliage - a total of six of them.

Rowaine throws her second and last dagger at the brigand beyond Vor-Wrek, hurting it badly but not dropping it. She frees her axe and stands guard over Anassia.

Krag casts Summon Monster II and drops a celestial dog behind one of the brigands.

A brigand with a sword rushes at Enok and hits him. Enok drops his bow and draws his two blades. One of them crits the brigand and it collapses.

Vor-Wrek uses Flurry of Blows on one of the brigands and drops it with two solid hits - 26 points of damage.

In the next three rounds Krag casts more Summon Monster spells. In total, a pack of 7 celestial dogs help hunt down the remaining brigands, making good use of the flanking rules but increasing DM workload! Hence the episode's name.

Finally all 6 attackers are killed. They appear malnourished, disease-ridden and shabbily dressed. Their equipment is serviceable but old and in disrepair. Definitely not ninja-types, but are they connected to those mysterious assassins, "The Murder"? We do not know.

Krag heals Enok's many wounds; the others are not seriously hurt. Rowaine is unhappy about leaving the brigand's bodies as they lay but is convinced of the need to be away quickly.

The party cross their original path and head northeast, leaving as little trail as possible. The aim is to intersect the east-west road before it leads into Korenheim, roughly 5-6 days away.
