Sir Veketh bursts into the classroom where he has left the group, armed and armoured and furious. After further questioning the group about their exploits he takes Dirrin and another staff member to scout out the site of the meeting, but not before ordering the group to report to the kitchen to peel about a thousand potatoes.

Sir Veketh returns at around lunchtime and orders the group to put down their potato peelers. He reveals that his scouting party found the meeting site, but did not find any sign of a nearby orc encampment. He then orders the group to head to class.

Taking their customary seats at the back of the classroom, the group soon notice Sarthen's absence. Enok excuses himself from the lesson, pretending to have forgotten his writing equipment. He searches for Sarthen in the dormitory but finds only the boy's belongings. Enok returns to class.

Vor-wrek decides to sound the alarm and heads to the manse to inform the headmaster.

"Sir Veketh!" Vor-wrek cries. "Sarthen isn't in class!"

"Perhaps that is because he is in my drawing room, where are conducting an interview… Return to class, boy." Vor-wrek sheepishy does so.

Enok briefly suspects that Sir Veketh may somehow be involved and is covering something up - a claim that Rowaine cannot countenance. "I would suspect Sarthen of falsehood over Sir Veketh any day."

Drake loses his temper at lunchtime and bullies Sarthen, trying to get him to talk about his chat with the headmaster. Sarthen breaks down in tears. Krag intervenes, trying to wrestle Drake's grip free but the half-orc's considerable strength cannot break Drake's technique. Eventually Drake throws the boy away, disgusted. Sarthen retreats to his bed, wailing. Krag follows him and attempts to calm the boy down, offering him an apple. Food cheers him up, after all.

The evening approaches and the call goes out for the Evensong service. Afterwards, Silque approaches Berathoin the underpriest and has a private chat. Rowaine notices and guesses that the reclusive girl is perhaps beginning to open up. Silque however is privately becoming a little bored of Rowaine's unwavering principles. She believes she has found somewhat more of a kindred spirit in Drake, and approaches him. They arrange to meet at the ugly oak tree once everyone is asleep for some night-time reconnaissance.

After the service Rowaine walks back to the dormitory with Silque. She hands over her night watch duty to another girl in the dorm and heads back to the temple for some good ol' fashioned forehead-to-stone repentance. The appointee immediately shirks her duty and goes to bed, leaving the coast clear for Silque.

At bedtime, the boys invite the club's newest recruit Sarthen downstairs into Krag's "bedroom" for a little chat. Vor-wrek starts asking more and more pointed questions of the eager-to-please Sarthen while Krag listens in, gauging the boy's responses. Drake stands at the foot of the stairs looking menacing.

Krag suspects Sarthen is "joshing" the group. The words all sound right, but something doesn't quite ring true…
