Alain's fabled return! Welcome back Alain!

Sigil tries to scale the chute's treacherous surfaces but cannot find a safe path. While looking, he and Catria hear a strange sound behind them and whirl around to see something shambling towards them! It doesn't sound leathery or appear to have wings, but the pair keep their guard up nonetheless.

What comes into view is short, wide and looks like bearded stone. In a voice like rocks scraping together, it mutters "Hmmmmmmph… Where am I?"

"Ermm, you're in a goblin-infested cave. Who are you?" Sigil replies, looking closely at the figure and edging behind Catria. It appears to be an axe-wielding dwarf.

"Baelor. Who are you?"

The party engage this curious character in conversation. Baelor seems to have been magically transported here, after a disagreement with a human spellcaster who stupidly questioned his parentage. He is journeying to deliver an item to a priesthood in Hallowdale. He exhibits many typical dwarven characteristics, including a rather abrupt and forthright manner, but appears to be reasonably friendly - for a dwarf. He even displays very un-dwarflike tolerance for other races. Baelor asks whether we are able to help him out of the caverns… And so Baelor joins our party, at least for the time being.

"Are you skilled at healing, Baelor?" Sigil asks, motioning towards Sack. "No, I usually un-heal," Baelor exclaims, thumbing the edge of his weighty axe thoughtfully.

Catria and Baelor scout around the unusually-shaped cavern at the chute's base, Sigil covering them with his bow. The cavern floor continues level and becomes progressively wider for roughly 50'-60', after which it begins to slope evermore downward and become V-shaped. The ceiling does likewise, mirroring the floor. Stalagmites and stalactites dot the sloping surfaces, making the going easier, but eventually the slope becomes dangerous enough to thwart the explorers and they return to the narrow base of the chute.

"Can you climb?" Sigil asks Baelor. "No, but I'm quite good at un-climbing."

Baelor does however possess rope, pitons and a small hammer. Sigil passes his torch to Catria, noticing her budding anxiety, and then borrows Baelor's climbing equipment to scale the chute where Nuff waits. Baelor climbs up soon after and gently lowers Nuff down the chute. Nuff expends all three of his Cure Light Wounds spells to revive Sack, who then climbs up the rope, followed by Catria. Baelor then pulls Nuff back up.

The party's resources are all but expended so we choose to regroup. We decide to make camp outside the chasm, thinking that it offers more escape routes should things get scary. Catria and Sigil climb aboard the two lashed-together tables and navigate their way back to the beginning of the water-filled corridor, aided by Nuff. They then tether the tables as before and allow it to drift back downstream. Baelor climbs aboard and Sack holds on while the others haul them upstream. The group then safely make their way out to the sunlight at the base of the chasm.

Sigil climbs up the rope still attached to the mechanism above. His head clears the lip at the top when he sees about 10 men, 40'-50' away! He quickly ducks back down, finds hand- and foot-holds on the chasm wall and severs the rope with his knife. The rope snakes down and disappears into the pool at the bottom. "That wasn't the plan…" Baelor murmurs and looks upward, seeing Sigil scrambling back down.

"People! At the top! Lots of them!" Sigil warns and urges the party back inside the corridor.

The party head farther inside the complex, fully expecting the group above to eventually descend and enter. It looks like we are the goblins now! The group outside might be friendly, but they might not… So where is the best defensible position?
